Crisis events demand different interventions than are typically needed in less intense conflict situations. The core concepts and skills of crisis management have been developed, tested, and applied within the emerging area of hostage or crisis negotiation, and are now being applied to other volatile, potentially violent situations.
There is little opportunity for conflict resolution professionals to obtain the necessary preparation for crisis management efforts in school violence, workplace crises, family mediation and community relations, or law enforcement and government incidents.
The result is that while these areas are in need of conflict resolution professionals who are trained to de-escalate the most difficult situations, those individuals who are currently in the position of dealing with them are often not adequately prepared. This Section is committed to bringing information that will be useful to law enforcement, layperson’s and other professionals in the field of crisis negotiation, intervention and management.
