  The DEA Employee Assistance Program

Policy:

The DEA Employee Assistance Program is a voluntary and confidential service designed to meet the unique needs of DEA Employees and their families for assistance in the prevention and management of individual, family, and vocational problems.

Services:

  • Counseling… Up to six sessions (per problem, per person) of individual, couples, of family counseling with a licensed, mental health professional in your geographic area are provided. If the problem does not seem resolvable in that time frame, or if specialized services are needed, an appropriate referral will be arranged. Clients referred for in patient treatment are monitored both during and after service completion
  • Assistance for Managers… EAP managers may obtain direct consultation for workplace issues from either their local Area Clinicians or the EAP staff at DEA Headquarters. For more sever problems, on-site organizational assessment and intervention services can be provided with the approval and intervention services can be provided with the approval of the EAP Administrator. There are no preset limits on these services.
  • Prevention & Education… Each year the EAP provides over 250 workshops on over 30 different topics throughout the United States. Our programs are designed to help prevent problems before they start, and to resolve early-stage problems before they get larger. Additionally, each division is targeted for annual EAP orientation programs and congressionally mandated Drug-Free Workplace trainings
  • Emergency Intervention… The EAP maintains a 24-hour, toll-free hotline, (800) 275-7460, that responds to requests for emergency services any time of the day or night. When a traumatic incident occurs, the EAP immediately dispatches specially trained Agents (Trauma Team Members) who provide on-the-spot assessment and victim support. Within 48 hours EAP Clinicians provide Trauma Briefings to all victims and those emotionally close to the victims.
  • Eligibility:

All DEA Employees, their spouses, unmarried, dependent children through age 22, their parents, and in-laws are eligible for EAP services. Dependent children over age 22 with disabling handicaps are also eligible for services.

    Staff:

Two to four MD, Ph.D., and/or MSW mental health professionals are assigned as Area Clinicians in each DEA Division. These contract professionals are the primary service providers for the EAP. Program leadership, management consultation, and direct services to DEA Headquarters are provided by the EAP Administrator and EAP Specialist assigned there.

    Cost:

All services, including the initial six sessions with a professional counselor are provided free of charge. Inpatient care and any services provided via referral are the responsibility of all Employees and their family. When a referral is necessary, the referring EAP Clinician will make every effort to identify a professional who accepts the Employee’s insurance.
