EAP Services
Listed below are all the services available to your employees when your company partners with the Health & Human Services Group in the development of an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

  1. "At Risk" Services
The Health & Human Services Group works with your management and employees to teach them to identify and evaluate any potential unhealthy behaviors in their coworkers.

  2. Mediation and Conflict Resolution Services
HHSG’s mediation services provide a constructive process for resolving differences and conflicts between individuals, work units, and/or between management and employees.  Our mediation services provide an alternative to avoidance, destructive confrontation, unfair labor practices, prolonged litigation, or violence.  Mediation gives management and employees an opportunity to take responsibility for the resolution of their dispute and control the outcome.

Mediation Service is designed to preserve individual interests while strengthening relationships and building trust between people, to create processes that make the job environment work for all of us.  The mediation is a process of dispute or conflict resolution in which one or more impartial mediators intervene in a conflict situation with the consent of the disputants and assists them in negotiating a consensual and informed agreement.  In mediation, the decision-making authority rests with the parties themselves.  Recognizing variations in styles and cultural differences is the role of the HHSG mediator; it involves assisting the disputants in defining and clarifying issues, expressing their feelings, reducing hostility, reducing obstacles to communication, exploring possible solutions, and reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement.

  3. Crisis Negotiation and Intervention
Crisis events demand different interventions than are typically needed in less intense conflict situations. The core concepts, and skills of crisis management have been developed, tested, and applied within the emerging area of hostage or crisis negotiation, and are now being applied to other volatile, potentially violent situations.

Conflict resolution professionals do not usually obtain the necessary preparation for crisis management efforts in school violence, workplace crisis, family mediation and community relations, or law enforcement and government incidents.

HHSG’s  conflict resolution professionals are trained in crisis negotiation, intervention and management, and are able to de-escalate or resolve our clients’ most difficult and volatile situations without legal complications.

  4. Counseling Services
Counseling services provided by the Health & Human Services Group are designed to aid your employees no matter what their needs may be. Typical types of counseling available include emotional, family, marital, legal, and financial, although almost any other issue can be accommodated as well.

HHSG uses brief solution focused counseling services to help clients resolve problems that are troubling and impacting their performance at work.  Counseling services take no more than three to six sessions and are provided “face to face” by licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, clinical social workers, or other mental health professionals.  Clients are seen in the private office of the licensed clinician, usually within 72 hours of their initial call to the EAP.  Provider’s offices are located within a reasonable driving distance from client work sites.

  5. Crisis Intervention
The EAP provides rapid crisis intervention services as required by clients. The EAP responds to crisis calls within the hour, to assist employees and managers in dealing with emergent problems. Crisis problems include: having to deal with sudden bad news (such as the death a co-worker), inappropriate behaviors of a disgruntled or intoxicated employee, or a catastrophic or violent event.

  6. Critical Incident Management
Critical incidents are unexpected and often tragic occurrences that can affect large numbers of employees. Each employee deals with tragedy in a different way, and the Health & Human Services Group can provide the necessary comfort and counseling to assist your employees with periods of hardship.

Critical incidents include accidents, shooting, hostage situations, vehicular accidents, suicides, job related injuries or fatalities, threats of violence, disasters, employee illnesses or deaths, terminations, or other catastrophic incidents

In the aftermath of a critical incident, CISM interventions, such as crisis intervention, psychological first aid, or critical incident debriefing, enable employees to immediately express their frustrations and fears, provide coping tools, and generate support among those who directly experienced or were affected by the incident.  This helps employees to avoid taking inappropriate amounts of time off, reduce absenteeism, minimize excessive talking and unproductive gossiping, and reduce personal leave time.  This all serves to allow employees to return to the performance of their duties with the least disruption to day-to-day operations.  CISM also provides the opportunity for distantly impacted individuals and groups to review their own actions and feelings, to assess negative response to the incident, and check out for themselves how they are managing their own stress levels and the stress levels of their peers.

Managers benefit from using CISM interventions to provide support and assistance to employees directly impacted by the critical incident.  This intervention helps restore performance and frees mangers’ time to address other non-interpersonal organizational needs that have been created as a result of the incident.

  7. Management Consultation
Often times personal difficulties in the lives of employees carry over into the workplace. In these situations it can be difficult for management and supervisory personnel to know just how to deal with the employee. For this reason, Health & Human Services Group provides Management Consultation in order to aid employers in dealing with these issues.

Managers and supervisors often find themselves unprepared for dealing with various personnel issues (e.g. determining if personal problems are contributing to performance problems or if an employee is dangerous to self or others).  Having the ability to receive immediate professional consultation allows managers and supervisors to make quick personnel decisions that promote productivity and loyalty to the agency and its mission.

The EAP provides managers and supervisors with telephone or on-site consultation to help them deal with various employee or unit problems.  Assistance may include coordinating the problem-solving intervention with the troubled employee and the supervisor, or the work unit.

The EAP provides professional consultations regarding workplace violence, threat assessments, psychological fitness, homicide or suicide risk, conflict resolution or mediation, and organizational assessment and interventions.

  8. Peer Support Services
Peer support is a confidential program designed to assist employees dealing with personal issues. Peer support also acts as a referral service.

The EAP has demonstrated the ability to improve the quality of life for employees by catering unique programs to meet their needs.  One such ‘specialized’ service that has proven to be very effective is the “Peer Support Program”.

Peer Support is a process whereby a person discusses a job-related or personal issue with a non-professional; usually a trained friend and co-worker.  The person defines a problem and solves it by himself/herself.  The Peer Support provider utilizes active listening skills to help the employee clarify issues and supports the person through the problem-solving process.

Peer Support Volunteers consist of personnel who have demonstrated an ability to cope with traumatic events and effectively deal with their peers or express a sincere desire to assist others.  Peer Support Volunteers are trained by EAP professionals to provide support and reassurance to fellow employees and their family members who have experienced a critical incident or significant emotional event.

The Peer Support Members receive ongoing professional training and support from EAP clinicians.  Monthly reports, designed to maintain the strictest of confidentiality, are used to monitor the special needs of the target population.  Under the direction of the EAP Peer Support Members are logging hundreds of hours each month in helpful service to co-workers.

  9. Threat & Risk Management
Many times, the threat of violence is itself so damaging that it can exceed the harm caused by physical injuries. The psychological torment of a threat can last longer than the healing time required for many physical assaults.

  10. Training Programs
HHSG offers 35 state-of-the-art professional multimedia training courses relating to personal and professional health and wellness.  Topics include Stress Management, Coping with Change, and Dealing with Difficult Employees.  HHSG can develop state of the art multimedia training programs to fit the specific needs of our clients and its occupational environment.

Training is provided by certified professional trainers who are also licensed mental health professionals subject-matter expertise.  HHSG collects comprehensive training evaluations to ensure the topic, material, presenter and facilities are of the best quality.

HHSG has delivered approximately 5,000 hours of training per year and has shown great flexibility by responding to requests from small  offices with only ten employees or large clients requiring delivery of training at multiple locations for thousands of employees nationwide.

Independent Services
In addition to those services provided by an Employment Assistance Program (EAP), The Health & Human Services Group also provides a variety of independent services. These services are designed for businesses that do not require a full time EAP, and can be obtained as needed.

  2. Crisis Negotiation and Intervention
Crisis events demand different interventions than are typically needed in less intense conflict situations. The core concepts and skills of crisis management have been developed, tested, and applied within the emerging area of hostage or crisis negotiation, and are now being applied to other volatile, potentially violent situations.

There is little opportunity for conflict resolution professionals to obtain the necessary preparation for crisis management efforts in school violence, workplace crises, family mediation and community relations, or law enforcement and government incidents.

The result is that while these areas are in need of conflict resolution professionals who are trained to de-escalate the most difficult situations, those individuals who are currently in the position of dealing with them are often not adequately prepared.   This Section is committed to bringing information that will be useful to law enforcement, layperson's and other professionals in the field of crisis negotiation, intervention and management.

  3. Organizational Development
The EAP provides Organizational Development (OD) services to management, which includes designing small unit and larger scale OD interventions. The EAP staff has experience with test construction, validation of tests, and statistical analysis of data and applied research. OD services include: 1) Initial assessment of perceived problem areas from key management personnel to help identify problems affecting the performance of the organization, 2) Development and implementation of a data collection strategy and methods, such as employee opinion surveys, structured interview questionnaires, and “360” surveys for management effectiveness, team building, and other leadership areas, to accurately determine the root causes of the problem, 3) Development and implementation of problem resolution strategies, 4) Implementation of selected solution strategies through problem solving focus groups, and 5) Re-assessment to determine if the OD change effort worked.

  4. Organizational Assessments
When interpersonal conflicts or morale problems begin to undermine productivity, the EAP is often called to conduct a Unit Assessment.  This assessment is conducted by the EAP through a structured interview, usually conducted with individual employees.  Organizational 360 surveys (which can be customized to measure specific concerns) can also be added to the assessment.  Management is then provided with a comprehensive assessment report, which identifies unit problems and causal factors, as well as specific recommendations to remedy the problems in order to return the unit to a higher level of productivity.

  5. Organizational Interventions
When conflicts and other difficulties arise, and productivity is impaired, the EAP can design a customized intervention to help resolve specific group problems. These interventions include team building, anger management, conflict resolution, performance management, problem-solving groups, leadership improvement, and organizational change.

All organizational interventions are designed to repair or improve the working relationships between unit members, improve interpersonal communication and reduce misunderstandings, identify common goals, increase operational performance and achieve a stronger commitment to the agency mission.

  6. Psychological Evaluations
Sometimes employees experiencing difficulties in personal areas of their lives demonstrate negative behaviors in the workplace. Independent psychological evaluations provided by the Health & Human Services Group help to determine if your employees are healthy mentally and emotionally.
